How to Grow Fabulous Lashes.

Okay, If you’ve read my previous post you know I’m a mascara junkie.  I love lashes the bigger the better.  I’ve tried many products and techniques and here’s what I’ve learned.

If you’re in need of serious lashes in a few days your best options are professional eyelash extensions that are glued onto each hair individually or adhesive glue on lashes that last a day.

If you are looking for a long-term solution keep reading.

Professional Eyelash Extensions:  Initial visit cost $75-$250
Basically, eyelash extensions are adhered to natural lashes in a 60min to 90 min appointment.  These lashes naturally fall out with your natural lashes and require maintenance every 2 weeks.  This is a great, glamorous alternative for a busy week of bridal photos and marriage. Instantly, you have gorgeous, voluminous lashes. However, they require lots of expensive up keep and maintenance. Appointments every 2 weeks costing $25-50 per 2 weeks.  Pricey!!!Pricey! Again I would only suggest this if you need instant results.  Some lashes fell out sooner than others making my lashes look very awkward.

This was my first love.  After several weeks of use I noticed some growth.  About 8 weeks in, I started receiving compliments from co-workers and strangers.  This is a great cheap alternative.

Rapid Lash- $49.95
Don’t expect instant results, it took 5-6 weeks for me to notice longer lashes.  With a little bit of patience, I did notice longer lashes.  This is an awesome alternative to expensive lash products.  I would buy again.

Latisse- $124.22
Well after much hesitation, I finally tried the Latisse prescription.  I felt totally vain asking my eye doctor for a prescription.  12 weeks later OMG!! My lashes are out of control, so full and long.  The outer lashes are crazy thick.  I get complimented pretty much daily.  I was so happy with the results.  This product produces maximum results but is extremely pricey and was hard to justify on the pocketbook.
The picture at the top of this post are my results following 12 weeks of Latisse use.

Dora the Explorer cake.. How to

I decorated this cake for my nieces 2nd birthday.  She loves her Dora!  This was a pretty easy cake to make and took just a few hours.  The hardest part was getting the pink buttercream icing as smooth as possible.

Things you'll need:
- 2     8x3 round cake pans
-non-stick spray to coat the pans  (my personal favorite is Wilton Cake Release)
-Your favorite homemade or box cake mix

Coat cake pans with light non-stick spray,  mix cake recipe according to directions and cook according to directions.

-bubble gum balls, can be purchased at local party store
-Fondant   (I bought Wilton brand white and colored with cake coloring)
-Flower and round fondant cutters
-6 cups buttercream icing
-Wilton icing color Rose, Purple, Yellow and Green.
-Wilton grass tip #233, along with icing bags and couplers
-Wilton small round tip (to make lime colored dots)
-Fondant roller
-Dora doll or cut out   (I searched high and low for the perfect doll and eventually bought a bday card cut out Doras pic and taped it to hard poster board with double-sided tape)
-2  toothpicks  (Tape to dora cut out.  Once, connected to hard poster board.)
-Letters and stars can usually be purchased at local market with bakery

While cake was cooking I made buttercream icing and added almost a whole tube of Wilton icing color Rose.  Set aside a small amount of icing to make bright green and yellow color (1/4-1/2 cup).  Just a small amount of green and yellow coloring mixed into buttercream makes lime colored dots.  Decide what color you would like flowers and bigger/small dots.  Knead coloring into fondant.  Roll out and use cut outs, be creative.

After cooling cakes and leveling cakes.  Ice with pink buttercream icing.  Ice as smoothly as possible.  Next, add round cut outs and flowers. Keeping in mind how high your gum balls climb up the cake.  Use a small amount of buttercream to add center of flowers fondant cut out.  Add lime green buttercream dots in random spots.  Now figure out where name display will be.  Next, add grass with grass tip.  Make sure to pull straight up and in different directions to make grass appear more real.  I then, added gum balls(with firmness) changing every other color and not allowing 2 colors to touch.  Lastly, I waited to add Dora picture till I arrived at party place, so cake would fit in carrier.

I approach every cake with creativeness.  Be creative!

Questions just ask.

Secrets to a healthy, white smile!!!

Many of us associate a healthy smile with white dazzling teeth.  However, there is so much more to having a healthy mouth than white teeth.  Today, I will share my secrets to a healthy, white smile.

#1- Brush your teeth.  Preferably, with a fluoride containing toothpaste. I know many people who brush only 1x a day, in the morning, wanting to approach the world with a fresh mouth.  We eat, and drink all thru out the day.  Nighttime brushing is the most important time of the day to brush; otherwise we leave our snacks decomposing in our mouth over night (yumm).  This creates both halitosis (bad breath) and also leads to decay.
The average person spends less than 30 seconds brushing thier teeth.  It is recommended we brush at least 2 minutes each brushing session.

#2- Bristles matter.  Never use a hard or medium bristle toothbrush.  It is only recommended by the ADA to use a soft bristle toothbrush.  Scrubbing with a hard abrasive bristle toothbrush destroys your enamel and gums.  Once your enamel is gone, it’s gone forever, so brush gently.  A great investment is an electric toothbrush; they truly make a huge difference in the health of your mouth. I am a huge Philips Sonicare fan, and unfortunately they don’t pay me to promote their product.  My whole family uses this product.  Oral-B also makes great electric toothbrushes.  No, you don’t have to buy the most expensive electric toothbrush to get the job done.  You can purchase a $20 toothbrush and its still going to do a lot more than your manual toothbrush.  Spending a little more on your toothbrush may mean spending less at your dental visits.

#3- FLOSS, FLOSS, FLOSS.  Flossing is one of the most important steps in maintaining a healthy mouth.  People are living a lot longer than they used to, and one way to ensure your teeth last your entire life is FLOSSING.  I guess it’s no longer a secret! It takes less than a minute to do and removes smelly food, plaque and bacteria between the teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach.  WHAT’S THAT SMELL?  Just smell your floss after taking a vacay from flossing. EWW!  Floss comes in many styles, find a kind that works for you.

#4-DON’T BRUSH, right after eating or drinking.  When consuming foods, the pH of our mouths drops creating a more acidic environment, thus helping to break down and digest foods.  This acidity causes our enamel to soften.  Therefore, it’s not ideal to brush right after a meal.  We don’t want to scrub away our enamel. Rinsing with water can help neutralize the pH of our mouth faster. Wait at least 15-20 minutes to brush, following a meal. Xylitol containing gum/mints such as Spry Trident is a great alternative if unable to brush following mealtime.  However, this doesn’t mean you get to skip out on nighttime brushing.

#5- Drink more WATER and less flavored drinks.  Diet sodas, flavored waters, and sport drinks contain citric acids, dropping the pH in the mouth making you more susceptible to cavities.

#6- Eat it Fast!!! If your going to eat a bag of candy, or package of cookies it is better to eat them all at once than to snack on them all day.  The pH words again, are you seeing a recurring theme.  When pH levels drop, your susceptible to decay. Therefore, if you eat all the candy at once 20-40minutes later the pH levels have time to recover and neutralize.

#7- Nuts & Cheese.  Are high in fat, protein, phosphates and calcium they promote a healthy mouth and keep the mouth at a neutral pH.
Though nuts have had their fare share in breaking teeth.  So snack carefully.

#9- Avoid all forms of tobacco.  Tobacco creates a non-ideal environment in the mouth and the use can lead to bad breath, heavy stain, gum issues, decay and cancer.

#10- Visit your dentist office.  Decay typically does not hurt until the decay has grown pretty big.  Your dental office can take x-rays typically 1x/yr. to look for decay between the teeth or any other concerns.  It is usually best to take care of any issues sooner than later.  A small area of decay can grow into a large area of decay.  A small area of decay is a lot easier and cheaper to fill with a small filling than a large area of decay that may need a root canal, crown or total extraction. YIKES!  Your dentist office will also check for oral cancer.  Oral cancer is on the rise and you don’t have to be a tobacco user to get it. And, lastly even if your hygiene is impeccable you still need to have a professional cleaning, their instruments can reach tiny areas and below the gum line getting any deposits of tartar you may have missed.

#11- Getting a white smile.  If you would like whiter teeth, it is best to start the whitening process following a professional dental cleaning.  Of course, it’s more important to take care of any cavities prior to starting the whitening process.  Many great products are out on the market that can get your teeth white as a professional grade whitener.  However, if you choose to use store bought whitening strips, it may take a little longer to see optimal result, but cost your wallet a lot less.  The choice is yours.  Many people have sensitivity during the whitening process, if this occurs limit the time and frequency your teeth are in contact with the whitening agent.  You should consult your dentist before starting the whitening process.

Drug Store Mascara Reviews

Drug Store Mascara
Reviews

I truly am a mascara junkie.  I don't leave the house without it!  I find myself constantly trying new drug store brands but I do have favorites I always return to.

(From left to right)

Illegal Length Fiber Extensions- $6.94, I was really excited about this mascara and got a few compliments from strangers.  The brush divides the lashes beautifully and did add a couple millimeters.  However after a few hours of wear, I noticed dry black flakes below the lash line and on my upper cheeks.  I had the same experience with Volum' Express Falsies Flared

Loreal Double Extend Lash Boosting Mascara (Blue tube contains lash boosting serum -$9.48, red tube volume no boost serum-$8.47)  If you cant tell from the picture I'm a big fan of the Loreal Double Extend! Its easy to apply and labeled step 1 & step 2.  Step 1- Coats the lashes in a white base coat.  Step 2- brush on mascara, covering all of the white base coat.  Great product will buy again and again.  I also saw results from this product, so much that I bought the
Loreal Lash Boostin Serum (clear serum in clear tube with blue top).  Super easy to apply can be applied with or without makeup.  Trace lightly along the upper lash line.  After several weeks of use I began to notice slightly longer lashes.  This is a great drug store alternative to pricey lash lengthening serums.

Almay Intense i-Color Volumizing Mascara- $4.97 (and I had a $4 off coupon).
Great product, brush divides the lashes beautifully and great volume.  I feel like I can count every lash when I apply this mascara.  This is one of my favorites.  Only cons this product does flake after a few hours wear as well as glitter flakes that still appears after washing off my make-up.  The volume is great and far outweighs the cons in my own opinion.

CG Exact Eyelights- $7.24,  Claims to be an eye-brightening mascara.  I love the applicator.  Adds volume, not sure about the "eye-brightening" effects.  Does have light flecks of glitter that also sticks around after face-washing.  Great product overall and have bought multiple times.

Rimmel Max VolumeFlash R-$5.47  Last and defiantely least.  Upon application of this product I noticed all of my lashes became few, clumping together.  I didn't notice any flaking but appear to have an allergy to this product getting itchy red eyes the few times I tried the product.

Let me know what your favorite mascara is, as well as any make-up products you'd like me to review.

DIY Succulent/ Cacti Terrarium

I adore plants and feel they bring such life and color to a room.  That said even with a name like Rose I don't have the greenest thumb :/  I've been eyeing arrangements lately with a mixture of succulents and cactus.  However, similar arrangements at my local market run $50-$125 dollars.  Given my history with plants I was not willing to pay the big bucks for plant arrangements.  After a little thought and research I decided to make my own.

DIY succulent/cacti terrarium you will need:

- a terrarium/glass bowl (I decided to do an open type terrarium so the growth potential is not limited, also succulents and cacti prefer an open less humid environment)  I got mine at Michaels craft store they have a large selection and always have awesome coupons.
- Decorative sand (while at Michaels I also purchased decorative sand in both black and light brown.)
- Small River Rocks, these can be found at Michaels or in aquarium section of pet store
-  Succulents, cactus plants (after pricing these plants I found Home Depot had the best prices at $2.58 per planthttp://www.homedepot.com)
-Cactus/Succulent potting soil (* this is very important, this type of soil does not retain water like regular potting soil.  I also purchased this at Home Depot) I chose Micarle-gro brand scotts.com

Once you have all your materials, this project only takes minutes to complete.  I'd say it took me less than half an hour.
-First, I placed river rocks on the bottom of glass bowl, to help with drainage of water.
-Next I added both layers of black and light brown sand to give the arrangement appeal to eye.
-I followed that layer with Cactus/Succulent potting soil.
-At this point add plants.  This can be a bit tricky just make sure plants are covered to root tip with soil.
-Mist lightly with water and pack with hands.
-The next few steps are all about being creative add remainder of sand and rocks to make your terrarium appealing and unique to you.
-A beverage straw or paint brush are excellent tools for removing sparse sand and soil from the plants.  Blow gently.
-Lastly, these plants store-water and therefore, need very little water.
-I recommend misting lightly with a water bottle 1x month.

This arrangement cost me less than $25 and is blossoming at a fast pace.  Pics to follow.
